Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth political participation is crucial for the growth and sustainability of democratic systems, as it fosters civic engagement and strengthens the democratic process. In Damaturu Local Government Area (LGA), Yobe State, youth involvement in electoral processes has been increasing, with more young people participating in voter registration, election campaigning, and as candidates. However, despite this growing participation, challenges such as political apathy, lack of awareness, and the influence of traditional structures often hinder full youth engagement. This study seeks to evaluate the role of youth political participation in the electoral processes in Damaturu LGA, assessing how their involvement affects election outcomes and the broader political landscape.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Youth political participation is often limited by various social, economic, and political factors. In Damaturu LGA, while there has been an increase in youth engagement in the electoral process, the impact of this participation on election outcomes and democratic development remains unclear. This study will explore the barriers to full youth participation, evaluate the strategies used by youth in engaging with the electoral process, and examine the influence of youth participation on electoral outcomes in Damaturu LGA.
